The December issue of CQ features a brand new column, "Kids' Korner," for and about young hams, written by our new Youth Editor, 14-year-old Brittany Decker, KB1OGL.

Our December features start off with the results of the 2008 CQ World Wide DX 160 Meter Contests. The top scorers included: CW - K3ZM/4, VY2ZM, OK1IW,CN2R, TA3D,VE3NE, VE3FRX, CT9M & W8JI/4; SSB: K3ZM/4, VE3EY, VA3YT, VP6DX, KP4KE, VE3NE & CN3A.M,. Next, our resident "Keys" expert, Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, reviews the full line of Begali Morse code keys from Italy; and Contributing Editor Phil Salas, AD5X, reviews the "TalkSafe" from RPF Communications. This is a plug-in module to let you operate most mobile rigs "hands-free" with a Bluetooth headset. We've also got the rules for the 2009 CQ DX Marathon - remember to submit your 2008 score by January 31, 2009. Go to https://www.dxmarathon.com for details.

Among our columns, Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, reports on hams helping in a variety of situations ranging from bike races to hurricanes; "Math's Notes" editor Irwin Math, WA2NDM, talks about designing simple switching power supplies; and Washington Editor Fred Maia, W5YI, shares the secrets of getting short vanity calls when supposedly none are available.

"World of Ideas" editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, has his annual review of holiday goodies, from the Morse Express Christmas key to the "Sparkin' ring" novelty toy with a ham twist; Beginner's Editor Wayne Yoshida, KH6WZ, covers ham radio considerations when moving to a new home; and "The Weekender" editor Phil Salas, AD5X, has a project to build an inexpensive vertical antenna for 40 and 15 meters.

New Products Editor Anthony Luscre, K8ZT, introduces two new software defined radios from FlexRadio Systems, upgrades to the Ten-Tec Jupiter and much more; Digital Editor Don Rotolo, N2IRZ, looks at WINMOR, a new competitor to Pactor for using WinLink, plus an inside view of the process of developing a new digital mode; and QRP Editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, waxes eloquent on the "Nonstop Action, Nonstop Fun" of low-power operating.

Kids' Korner editor Brittany Decker, KB1OGL, starts off her new column with a look at two multigenerational ham families, one in New Jersey and one in Japan; DX Editor Carl Smith, N4AA, follows the youth theme with a report on involving young hams in DXpeditions, and Awards Editor Ted Melinosky, K1BV, tackles record-keeping and - among others - a short-term award marking the 125th anniversary of the Orient Express.

Next, "VHF-Plus" editor Joe Lynch, N6CL, reports on the space flight of video game developer and "space tourist" Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, who also happens to be the son of "first ham in space" Owen Garriott, W5LFL; Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR, has a tribute to longtime CQWW Contest Committee member and CQ RTTY DX and WPX Contest co-Director Paolo Cortese, I2UIY, who became a Silent Key in October at the much-too-young age of 48; and Propagation Editor Tomas Hood, NW7US, examines winter opportunities on the HF ham bands.

Finally, we've got our 2008 Annual Index, which will also be posted here on our website and merged into our online master index, which stretches back to 1980. (Our archive partner, Hamcall.net, has back issues online extending back to CQ's first issue in 1945.

A closing note: Our December issue also carries an announcement of a brand new CQ sweepstakes, offering a total of more than $14,000 in prizes to a variety of lucky winners.

That's a brief look at what's coming up in the December issue of CQ magazine, which should be on newsstands and in subscribers' mailboxes by late November.
